چکیده

Corneal transplantation is the most frequently performed type of tissue grafting (George & Larkin, 2004). It is a highly successful treatment of severe corneal disease. However, transplantation of tissue and organs in humans has a major setback: availability of donors. To solve this, there are currently many studies on the possible use of the pig as a source of hearts, kidneys, livers, Islets of Langerhans etc. for transplantation to humans (Tai et al., 2007; Cox & Zhong, 2005; Zhong, 2007). Because of the unique immune privilege of the anterior chamber, corneal grafting may be the most likely xenotransplantation to succeed. This makes the pig eye a particularly interesting experimental model. In the course of corneal transplantation, corneal thickness is a valuable indicator of graft failure and early rejection. Reliable reference material on the corneal thickness of the pig, however, does not exist. This study was conducted to investigate the normal thickness and diameter of the pig cornea.

Corneal thickness measurements with the Topcon SP-2000P specular microscope and an ultrasound pachymeter.

OBJECTIVE To compare the reproducibility of measurements obtained with a new pachymetry instrument, the Topcon specular microscope (Topcon SP-2000P; Topcon America Corp, Paramus, NJ), with those obtained by ultrasound pachymetry. METHODS Corneal thickness was measured in 40 eyes of 40 patients 3 times each with the Topcon SP-2000P and an ultrasound pachymeter (DGH 500, DGH Technology Inc, Ext...

Comparison of optical and ultrasound central corneal pachymetry.

In 100 eyes of 50 patients central corneal thickness was measured comparing optical to ultrasound pachymetry. With optical pachymetry the values were 1 to 40 micrometer (microns) lower in 64 eyes compared to ultrasound pachymetry. With ultrasound pachymetry the values were 1 to 18 microns lower in 26 eyes compared to optical pachymetry. In 10 cases no difference in pachymetry readings was seen ...

Central corneal thickness and anterior chamber depth measurement by Sirius® Scheimpflug tomography and ultrasound

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of the new Sirius(®) Scheimpflug anterior segment examination device for measurement of central corneal thickness (CCT) and anterior chamber depth (ACD) with that of CCT measurements obtained by ultrasound pachymetry and ACD measurements obtained by ultrasound biometry, respectively. METHODS CCT and ACD was measured in 50 right ...

Measurement of Central Corneal Thickness Using Ultrasound Pachymetry and Orbscan II in Normal Eyes

PURPOSE To compare ultrasound pachymetry and Orbscan II for measurement of central corneal thickness (CCT) in normal eyes. METHODS The current study was performed at Labbafinejad Medical Center (LMC), Tehran, Iran. Three hundred eyes from 150 healthy individuals referred for keratorefractive surgery were assessed first by Orbscan II and then by ultrasound pachymetry, and CCT values were recor...

Comparison of Central Corneal Thickness Measurements by Pentacam and Ultrasound Pachymetry in Normal Myopic Patients

INTRODUCTION Precise measurement of corneal thickness is of crucial importance in corneal refractive procedures. The aim of this work is to compare the central corneal thickness measurements using Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam) and contact US pachymetry in normal myopic patients. METHODS This retrospective cohort study was conducted on in 144 eyes of 72 normal myopic patients during 6 months....
